SMS Invests €110,000 in an Enhanced Waste Disposal System

February 5, 2026

The capacity of undifferentiated waste containers will increase by almost 60 percent in Quinta da Amizade, according to a press release.

According to the same source, in this residential neighborhood of the parish of Gâmbia, Pontes and Alto da Guerra (GPAG) there are 16 new buried containers being installed, each with a capacity of 5,000 liters, which will replace 42 surface waste containers, each with a capacity of 800 liters.

This intervention by the SMS, representing an investment of over 110 thousand euros, will reduce the number of containers on public roads, contributing to a better urban landscape integration of this waste collection system and anticipating the housing growth expected in the area. On the other hand, the buried containers contribute to strengthening urban cleanliness, reducing odors (due to reduced sun exposure) and to the efficiency of the collection services, allowing more waste to be collected with fewer trips.

The location of each of the new containers was defined by the SMS in conjunction with the parish council of GPAG and respects the principles of the regulatory body ERSAR, which recommends that undifferentiated containers be located at a distance of less than 100 meters from the property boundaries in urban areas. By the end of February, all buried containers should already be installed and operational in Quinta da Amizade, in Setúbal.
