Until January 31, professional and amateur photographers can submit their images about the natural world and science in Portugal and in the Portuguese-speaking African Countries to the sixth edition of the Photography Competition in Natural History and Science.
An initiative of the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon (MUHNAC), the contest aims to celebrate the power of imagery in disseminating Science and Nature.
On its online portal, the museum states that the action aims to show “the extraordinary that exists in our world” and “to stimulate observation, knowledge and photographic records that highlight the natural, scientific and technological diversity of two distinct, but deeply connected, continents.”
The contest jury “seeks images that surprise,” it adds. That is, “technically excellent photographs, but also creative, genuine and capable of capturing unique moments of Natural History and Science.”
The evaluation of images will be divided by age groups and by themes. In the adults’ group, there are the categories Biodiversity, Geodiversity, Microphotography, History of Science and Technology, Astrophotography and Protected Areas. In the children and youth group, the categories were defined as Child Photography in Natural History and Science, for participants under 10 years of age, and Youth Photography in Natural History and Science, which covers ages 10 to 17.
The best photographs in each category, MUHNAC explains, will be evaluated by a general panel of judges, which will select the grand winner. The author of the distinguished image will receive the title of Photographer of the Year in Natural History and Science. In each category, a special mention may also be awarded by the respective panel of judges.
In terms of the calendar, the submission of photographs ends on January 31, the evaluation and selection by the jury takes place until March 15, and the 6th Edition of the Photography Exhibition is planned to run from May 7 to August 30. The museum notes that the dates presented may be subject to changes.
Registration to the contest is done through an online form available on the MUHNAC site, where the regulation of the action for all interested parties is also available.
