Child Killed in Alleged Shark Attack in Inhambane Province, Mozambique

December 28, 2025

Mozambican authorities alerted to the discovery of the body of a child with some parts missing in an alleged shark attack in a bay in Inhambane Province, southern Mozambique, the Mozambique Police (PRM) announced.

According to a statement from the force, the body of the minor was found last Thursday in the Prainha area in Inhambane. Signs of an attack were noted, including the absence of one leg and part of the other lower limb, “with indications of having been attacked by an aquatic animal, presumably a shark.”

The PRM therefore appeals for maximum prudence by coastal communities, bathers, artisanal fishermen and other users of the Bay of Inhambane in view of the seriousness of the situation, as a way to “safeguard human life.”

The police assured that it continues to monitor the situation and also asked for the population’s cooperation, recommending that any incident or suspicious sighting be promptly reported to the competent authorities.

In June, a human foot was discovered inside a shark carcass ashore along the banks of a river in Pebane District, Zambézia Province, central Mozambique, a local police source told Lusa at the time.
