Quercus has just published the book “Roots of the Future – Quercus: 40 years, today and always!”, a work that marks four decades of environmental activism in Portugal and invites readers to take an active role in building a more sustainable future. For each copy sold, a tree will be planted under the Create Forests Project, promoted by the association.
More than a historical record, “Roots of the Future” crosses a brief review of the Portuguese environmental movement with real stories of people who dedicated — and continue to dedicate — their lives to defending the environment. The book shows how Quercus’s action has evolved over time, following new ecological and social challenges, without ever losing sight of the central goal: to protect Nature and promote a fairer and more sustainable society.
For Alexandra Azevedo, president of the Quercus National Board, the work goes beyond institutional memory: “Much more than a mere record of memory, it is a call to conscience and an invitation to reflection and action. An open invitation to all those who believe that the world can be different: fairer, greener and more united.”
Throughout the chapters, the reader is guided through the “roots” of the movement, the people and causes that marked the association’s history, and by a clear vision of “the future we want” — a future based on greener cities, resilient territories, and communities involved in protecting biodiversity.
The impact of the initiative goes beyond reading. In addition to planting a tree for each book sold, readers will also have the possibility to participate directly in planting actions, joining Quercus teams in future environmental volunteering initiatives.
The book has a cover price of 14.95 euros and can be purchased in the Penguin / ARENA, with a 10% discount, as well as in various physical bookstores, including FNAC, Bertrand and Almedina. If it is not available in a particular store, any bookseller can order it at the customer’s request. Quercus members also benefit from an additional 10% discount, in accordance with the association’s usual terms.
With Roots of the Future, Quercus celebrates 40 years of environmental action, turning this celebration into a concrete gesture of ecological regeneration and of society’s involvement in the protection of ecosystems.
