Madeira Electricity Production Up 2.2% in 2025

Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira rose 2.2% in 2025 compared with the previous year, announced today by the Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM), underscoring that the total amounted to around 974.6 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

“Compared with 2024, there was a greater predominance of hydro sources (+91.0%), photovoltaic (+15.5%), and urban solid waste (+0.8%), to the detriment of thermal (-3.1%) and wind (-16.9%)”, the regional authority notes.

The data, provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), indicate that the share of total energy produced using a thermal source decreased, moving from 67.1% in 2024 to 63.6% in 2025.

In the same vein, the renewable quota rose from 32.9% to 36.4%, the highest percentage since the beginning of the available series (2009).

According to DREM, the predominance of natural gas as a source for electricity production, accounting for 19.0% of the total (16.5% in 2024), registered an increase of 17.6% compared with the corresponding period.
